Shift with Me

2021-01-08 01:00
This week's shift with me post is about getting out of your comfort zone and being better than you were yesterday.

Here are my top three from this past week.

Dreams die in your comfort zone: full read here
The biggest take away from this read was the realization that we often don't do something - such as try new things, or do a public speaking gig, or meet new people, etc. - because we are simply afraid. So, what we do is we make a bunch of excuses about why something will not work, why we shouldn't do this thing or talk to this person. In fact, the root cause of this is fear. So, what if instead of making excuses of why we don't do something, we bring to light our fears, confront them, and move past them? What if it is that simple? What if we are putting energy in the wrong places and instead we should be shifting in within to uncover our fears and stop them from stopping us living our best lives?

I think it is that simple. Which fear has stopped you from doing something that you later wished you did?

Going through a career change? You might relate to this: full read here
Career change used to be non-existent. You were typically expected to stay in one job for majority of your career until you retire (and begin to wish you tried something else). But, today - career change is something that is often expected and even encouraged. As we live longer and longer - does it really make sense to stay in one job role/one company? Even if you love what you do - the world of work is changing so fast that if you want to keep up and grow - you are likely to be forced to change your career or evolve in one way or another. In addition to that, there are so many more opportunities, or should I say - access to opportunities than ever before. AND, with the whole covid impact, working remotely from anywhere opened up even more doors for us to open - now globally and virtually.  Which doors have you opened lately? Which doors have you not tried yet?

This read has some cool stats about career shifters and what encouraged them to take the leap.
I personally had 17 jobs (yup! I can feel your facial expression through the internet!) until I found my true calling - which is learning and development. And, luckily I change those jobs early one (you can listed to my Ted talk here for the full story). So, I am not in the nature to settle, but what I know is that working with people over the years, I can tell you there is no perfect time to change careers & sometimes you just have to jump (strategically) and having support does help, no matter how wiser or young you are.

If you are struggling with start your mornings off strong, this one is for you: full video here
I was always a morning person but I was not always productive in the morning, nor was my routine very set or intentional - it was more of just early mornings, going with the flow, usually followed by fitness and breakfast. But, in recent years I added journaling (5 minute journal) + meditation (I do this one in the morning). Followed by maybe reading a bit, something light. Then breakfast/coffee and work mode. I used to do exercise in the morning, but lately it has been difficult work making time for it in the morning -  Now, I shifted my fitness to evening or early afternoons when I need a quick energy boost to continue with my day. Adding journaling & meditation significantly helped me better as a person - more focused and with a calmer mind (most of the time at least). I find interesting how these small changes really make a difference. We are often looking for magic tips to create a more productive routine and habits, and I think this is it! These small things - once they become a routine - really impact how we lead the rest of the day.
