A better way to job search

When it comes to job search strategy, what does it actually look like? How to create one?

First and foremost, have an idea of where you want to go - narrow down as much as possible and get clear about what is the next right step. This is the most time consuming and challenging step if you are not sure about what is next for you. It is essential here to spend some time before proceeding - talk to people, practice some self-awareness about what your values and goals are and what skills you have and what value you can bring to an organization/business. Talk to a career coach to help you get that clarity would be beneficial as well. Reach out for a chat if you need to.

Check out CareerStop or CareerExplorer to help you explore your career options and interests.

Avoid just mindlessly submitting online applications without a proper understanding of what you can offer and what makes you unique compare to others - tangible skills and benefits you bring to the table.

Avoid applying online and IF you do make sure you reach out to an actual person in that organization - use hunter.io to location just about anyone’s email address (as long as you have the first and last name). Spend your time where it brings the most results - networking. Connect with others. If you are an introvert or just not as keen to meet new people, check out this article on 'how to network as an introvert.' And, please remember it is a long term game, not an immediate result - which is probably why we insist on online applications because once we hit that submit button, we just feel like we accomplished something, but in reality we just waster our time and the chances of someone actually seeing that application are very low - minimize your online application time to 5% of overall job search - focus on networking and personal branding.

Create a brand around you - does your network know what you do and what you are good at? How are you showcasing your work and success? It is not about showing off, it is about presenting yourself to your network and creating a brand. Just think if Nike did not have any commercials or Apple did not host any events - they would not have a strong brand or customer base as they do now - same applies for individuals - you have a brand, make sure people know it.

Experiment and adjust your strategy as needed. Try different approaches when it comes to expanding your network and connecting with others. Keep trying different things, reflect on what works. If something is not working / giving you results within a month then it is probably a good time to review your approach and try something new.
